About VALD

What is VALD Performance?

VALD systems are the assessment standard across the AFL, NRL, Super Rugby, the Australian Institute of Sport, and professional programmes in the English Premier League and NBA. They are designed to produce objective, reproducible strength and movement data that clinical assessment alone cannot reliably provide.

At Move Physiotherapy, we use VALD ForceDecks and VALD dynamometry to assess every new patient as part of their initial consultation — at no additional cost. This means your physiotherapist starts with data, not assumptions.

Why It Matters

Why Objective Assessment Produces Better Outcomes

The case for data-driven physiotherapy is straightforward: you can't manage what you can't measure.

🎯

Removes Guesswork from Assessment

Traditional physiotherapy assessment relies heavily on clinical experience and subjective judgement. VALD technology produces force data in kilograms, watts, and percentages. Your physiotherapist can identify a 12% deficit in your left hip abductors — not "your left hip feels weaker than your right."

📈

Tracks Recovery with Precision

Repeat testing every 4–6 weeks gives you and your physiotherapist hard evidence that your program is working — or that it needs adjusting. Most patients find visible progress data motivating. It also confirms when you're ready to return to sport or full activity, rather than relying on time or pain alone.

⚖️

Identifies Asymmetry You Can't Feel

The human body compensates remarkably well. You can have a 25% strength deficit in one limb and feel completely normal during everyday activities — but that deficit is a significant injury risk under load. VALD picks up bilateral differences that don't show on a clinical exam.

🏅

The Same Standard as Elite Sport

VALD technology is the assessment standard across AFL, NRL, Super Rugby, Australian Olympic programs, and the EPL. Move Physiotherapy uses the same equipment and methodology to hold every patient — recreational or competitive — to an objective standard of recovery.

Criteria-Based Return to Sport & Activity

Returning to sport based on time or pain resolution is a leading cause of re-injury. VALD allows us to set objective criteria for each stage of rehabilitation — for example, achieving 90% limb symmetry index before returning to full training — and confirm those criteria are met before you progress.

🔄

Included in Every Initial Consultation at No Extra Cost

At Move Physiotherapy, VALD technology assessments are included in every initial consultation as standard — not charged as an add-on. You receive elite-level objective data as part of your first appointment.

The Technology

VALD Systems Used at Move

We use two complementary systems that together provide a comprehensive picture of your strength, symmetry, and movement quality.

⚖️

VALD ForceDecks

Dual force plates that measure ground reaction forces with clinical precision. ForceDecks assesses bilateral strength asymmetry, landing mechanics, single-leg stability, and explosive power — giving your physiotherapist objective data on how each limb is performing independently.

Bilateral strength comparison
Jump and landing mechanics
Single-leg squat analysis
Return-to-sport criteria testing

📊

VALD Dynamometry

Handheld force measurement devices used throughout rehabilitation to track strength gains in targeted muscle groups. VALD Dynamometry allows your physiotherapist to test strength at multiple stages of your program, confirming the numbers are moving in the right direction.

Serial strength monitoring
Limb symmetry index tracking
Muscle-specific deficit identification

What to Expect

How VALD Assessment Works at Move

01
Included in Your Initial Consultation
VALD technology assessment is a standard part of every initial physiotherapy consultation at Move — at no extra cost to you. There's nothing to arrange.
02
30-Minute Comprehensive Assessment
Each VALD session is 30 minutes — enough time for a thorough assessment of the injured area and all associated structures. Your physiotherapist tests not just the primary site of pain, but the surrounding muscle groups that influence it. Testing is non-invasive and requires nothing beyond comfortable clothing.
03
Instant Results & Interpretation
Results are available immediately. Your physiotherapist will explain your force outputs, any bilateral asymmetries identified, and what they mean for your treatment and rehabilitation plan.
04
Repeat Testing to Track Progress
VALD testing is repeated at 4–6 week intervals throughout your program, and at clinical milestones, to confirm your rehabilitation is producing measurable strength gains.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the VALD assessment hurt?
No. VALD testing is non-invasive and involves performing standardised movements or exerting force against the device. Testing is typically brief — a few minutes — and does not involve any procedures beyond what your body can already do.
Is the VALD assessment covered by private health insurance?
VALD technology is incorporated into your initial physiotherapy consultation as a standard part of our assessment process. It is not billed separately, so there is no additional cost beyond your standard consultation fee. Your normal private health fund rebates apply.
What if I'm not an athlete? Is this still relevant for me?
Absolutely. VALD technology is equally valuable for a 65-year-old managing hip osteoarthritis as it is for a footballer recovering from ACL surgery. Objective strength measurement helps guide rehabilitation for everyone — the goal is to identify deficits and confirm they're improving, regardless of activity level.
How often will I be tested?
An initial VALD assessment is performed at your first appointment to establish your baseline. Repeat testing is typically performed every 4–6 weeks to track progress, or at clinical milestones (e.g. return to sport, discharge). Your physiotherapist will determine the appropriate intervals for your program.
Can I see my results?
Yes. Your physiotherapist will walk you through your VALD results at the time of testing and explain what the numbers mean in the context of your condition and goals. Results are documented in your clinical notes and used to guide your rehabilitation program.
