Fast, Effective Relief for Muscle Pain and Tension

Dry needling targets the source of pain — trigger points deep within muscle tissue — for relief that other techniques can't always reach.

Dry Needling

What we treat & how we work

Dry needling uses fine acupuncture-style needles inserted directly into myofascial trigger points — tight, hypersensitive knots within muscle tissue that refer pain to other areas of the body. The technique causes a brief local twitch response that releases the trigger point and reduces pain.

At Move Physiotherapy, dry needling is used as part of a broader treatment plan — never in isolation. It's particularly effective for stubborn pain that hasn't responded to massage or other manual therapy alone, and is regularly combined with exercise rehabilitation for lasting results.

Our Approach

The Move Process

01
Assessment First
Dry needling is only used where clinically indicated. Your physio or therapist will assess whether it's appropriate for your presentation.
02
Trigger Point Identification
The affected muscles are palpated to identify active trigger points — the source of your referred pain.
03
Needling Treatment
Fine needles are inserted into the trigger point. You may feel a brief twitch or deep ache — this is a normal and therapeutic response.
04
Integrated Rehabilitation
Dry needling is paired with exercise and manual therapy to address the underlying cause and prevent recurrence.

Common Questions

FAQs

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?+
No. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles. Dry needling is based on Western anatomy and neuroscience, targeting specific trigger points within muscles to reduce pain and improve function.
Does dry needling hurt?+
The needle itself is very fine and insertion is usually not painful. You may feel a brief twitch or deep ache when the trigger point is stimulated — this is a normal and positive sign that the technique is working.
How many sessions will I need?+
Most people notice improvement within 1–3 sessions. Chronic conditions may require more. Your practitioner will give you a realistic expectation at your first appointment.
Are there any side effects?+
Mild muscle soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment is common. Bruising occasionally occurs. Serious adverse events are very rare when performed by a trained and qualified practitioner.
