Vestibular Physiotherapy
Dizziness is common, and often very treatable
Your vestibular system is the balance organ of the inner ear and the brain pathways that make sense of its signals. Together with your eyes and the sensors in your neck and feet, it keeps your vision steady and your body upright. When part of that system is irritated or damaged, the result can be vertigo (a spinning sensation), light-headedness, unsteadiness, nausea, or a feeling that the world keeps moving after you have stopped.
Many of the most common causes are mechanical or recoverable. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), where tiny crystals in the inner ear move into the wrong canal, often responds to a simple repositioning manoeuvre performed in the clinic. After an inner-ear infection or vestibular neuritis, the brain can learn to compensate, and targeted exercises speed that process up. Systematic reviews support vestibular rehabilitation as a safe and effective treatment for this kind of inner-ear dizziness.
Vestibular physiotherapy starts with working out exactly what is driving your symptoms. We take a detailed history, test your eye movements, balance and positional responses, and check your neck, then build a plan around the cause. If anything in your assessment suggests a problem that needs medical investigation, we will tell you and help you get it looked at.

Physiotherapists who treat dizziness and vertigo
Vestibular appointments are available at all four Move clinics. When you book, choose one of these physiotherapists at the clinic that suits you.
Call 000 if dizziness or vertigo comes on suddenly with any of: slurred speech, facial drooping, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, double vision or loss of vision, a sudden severe headache, difficulty walking, or loss of consciousness. These can be signs of a stroke.
New dizziness with chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or fainting also needs urgent medical assessment rather than physiotherapy.
