Physiotherapy After a Total Knee Replacement
An effective and optimal physiotherapy program is paramount in your post operative recovery from a Total Knee Replacement. Particularly, the 12-weeks following surgery are hugely important for your rehabilitation and recovery – which begins the day after your operation. Most likely, you have already been visited by your physiotherapist in hospital to commence your walking with crutches, bed and chair exercises. Upon your discharge, the continuation and progression of these exercises are paramount to ensure you can return to a fit and healthy lifestyle.
Move Physiotherapy is a highly trusted and reputable clinic both with multiple Orthopaedic Surgeons and in the wider Booragoon and Fremantle areas. We do not take shortcuts with your rehabilitation and will ensure you get the most from your Total Knee Replacement.
However, also important to remember is that every knee and person is different and the rate at which your knee recovers will be different from your friends and colleagues. Also important is that increases in physical activity are gradual; with significant increases in pain and swelling collectively being measures of whether you have done “too much.”
It is generally expected that you will stay between 3-5 days in hospital following your knee replacement. Your discharge depends heavily on your general health, medical issues and rate of progression with your rehabilitation. It is generally recommend that you are reviewed by your out-patient physiotherapist on the second week following your surgery.
Move Physiotherapy offer both home and clinic-based appointments in the initial stages following your surgery; however as you improve we find we can provide a higher quality of exercise in clinic. We ensure that our clinics are the best equipped physiotherapy clinics for this reason! Your recovery will require home exercises to be completed multiple times daily. However, we can also supplement this exercise with Clinical Reformer Pilates; and our studios are equipped with dumbbells, kettlebells, squat racks, force platforms and more. This means that as you progress; we can utilise our other equipment to challenge you.
Whatever your end goal – whether this be returning to walking, rowing, kayaking or bike riding; just to name a few recent examples; our physiotherapists can combine their knowledge in human movement, exercise prescription and injury rehabilitation to help achieve your health and physical activity goals.
